Why You’ll Love Assisted Living in South Carolina

South Carolina has long been considered a premier destination for those seeking to enjoy their retirement to the fullest. It’s not hard to see why: from its blend of small towns and culturally rich city centers to its arts and culinary scene to its temperate climate and unbeatable natural beauty, South Carolina really does have it all. Assisted living in South Carolina lets you experience the best the Palmetto State has to offer, with the added support, community, and peace of mind that comes with joining an assisted living community.

Perks of Assisted Living in South Carolina

A 2023 National Movers Study found that more than 25 percent of people who move to South Carolina do so for retirement. Why do so many retirees turn to assisted living in South Carolina?

A Climate That Suits Seniors

One of the biggest draws for seniors relocating to South Carolina is its mild, comfortable climate. Snow is rare, particularly in coastal and central regions, making outdoor activities accessible year-round. For seniors who enjoy a sense of seasons changing throughout the year but find harsh winters in northern states difficult, South Carolina’s mild, pleasant winters can provide a welcome relief. And South Carolina summers don’t reach the sweltering highs that other southern states, like Florida, often experience. Its mild but varying climate is a notable draw for many seniors relocating to South Carolina.

Natural Beauty

South Carolina has something for everyone in the great outdoors: ocean beaches, national parks, mountains, lakes, rivers, historical preserves, premiere wildlife and bird-watching destinations, and more.

Beautiful Destinations Within Reach

South Carolina is ideally positioned within driving distance of several major cities and attractions that offer senior-friendly activities to suit various interests.

Greenville

This upstate city — home to The Gables on Pelham — is one of South Carolina’s gems. It is known for its vibrant downtown, award-winning parks like Falls Park on the Reedy, and growing cultural scene. Just a short drive from the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville perfectly blends nature and urban living. Senior-friendly attractions include scenic walking trails, farmer’s markets, and day trips to nearby mountain towns.

Charleston

This historic city is a haven for history buffs and art lovers alike. Its cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and numerous museums make it a popular day trip. Seniors can enjoy boat tours around the harbor or take leisurely walks through Charleston’s beautiful gardens and parks.

Myrtle Beach

South Carolina’s stunning coastline is another highlight for the Palmetto State Myrtle Beach, known for its long stretches of sandy beaches, offers more than just sun and surf. Seniors can also take advantage of a variety of recreational opportunities, including golf, fishing, and strolls along the boardwalk.

Financial Benefits for Seniors

South Carolina is one of the more affordable states for seniors seeking assisted living, offering tax breaks that make retirement living more affordable:

  • Before turning 65, individual taxpayers receiving retirement income can deduct up to $3,000 of qualifying retirement income annually. After turning 65, that deduction goes up to $10,000.
  • South Carolina residents who are 65 or older are also allowed an income tax deduction of up to $15,000
  • Qualifying military retirees over the age of 65 with taxable military retirement income may also deduct up to $30,000 of their military retirement income.
  • Social Security benefits and railroad retirement taxed federally are not subject to South Carolina state tax.
  • Seniors aged 85 and above are allowed a 1 percent lower state sales tax for personal use purchases.

Rich History

South Carolina is an ideal landing place for history buffs. The state was home to more than 200 battles during the Revolutionary War, including the 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain, one of the first major victories over the British for American troops in the South. History lovers can also visit the International African American Museum at Gadsden’s Wharf.
